It is highly important for students to come to school and feel comfortable in their classroom. Promoting diversity is a shared goal by many educators but achieving this goal can sometimes be hard to accomplish within the classroom. I believe teachers should address the disability or diverse needs of new students to the class for everyone to interact and learn alongside each other peacefully. This also gives students within the classroom a chance to ask questions and discuss what it means to have a disability. Teachers can do this through class discussions, reading books, watching videos and even inviting special guest speakers. As educators we need to educate our students and ensure they understand that everyone wants to belong and be included. Many students (even ones without a disability) sometimes feel as if they do not belong, which can lead to feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, and worthlessness.
In my classroom I like to read stories to my students which address how everyone is different and we all have different strengths and weaknesses. As a teacher one of the best moments in my teaching career is the time, I read a story to my students about being different and in the story, it discussed students who were in wheel chairs, different nationalities, and even students who were adopted. One of the students in the class asked what the word adopted meant, so I explained to the students that sometimes when someone knows they can’t take care of a child and can’t give them the best life possible they give that child to someone who can. I then explained to the students how I was adopted and what a great life I had, and it turned me into the person I am today. After that discussion, I thought that would be the end of the talk about adoption, however to my surprise the next day I received and email from one of my students parents thanking me, because their child came home talking about adoption and how special it was, it opened a window of opportunity to inform her son that he was also adopted. This opened my mind and lead me to understand that some disabilities are not on the surface and we never know what special needs our students might have.
Teachers need to establish and maintain a positive classroom community not just when a child with a disability is arriving but throughout the entire school year. We need to encourage respect for one another the bible states “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10, New International Version). By walking in God’s word, and working together, a focused and engaging education plan for students with diverse needs can be implemented. Knowledge is power, the more students know and understand the less prejudice and misconceptions there will be (Chapin, 2013).
