By the time you are preparing to write this essay the United States will have recently completed the 2016 elections. In a pluralistic, democratic nation such as the United States there are always many opposing viewpoints about how national problems should be addressed. The 2016 elections have revealed in stark terms divides in the American electorate. Passions have run deep. Many of us, on all sides of issues, have used belief rather than thinking, prejudice rather than evidence, and emotion rather than logic to reach conclusions. Rather than trying to understand opposing points of view many of us have rejected them unthinkingly as un-American.
Democracies are often fragile institutions. There existence is not guaranteed. Democracies demand much from the electorate. In order to function successfully a democratic government with a divided electorate must find compromise. Compromise is the most essential ingredient in a lasting democracy. This is not the first time compromise has seemed extremely difficult in American history. This questions is designed to elicit your ideas (not emotions) about pluralism, democracy, and compromise.
Describe what you think are two of the main problems facing the United States at this time?
Delineate at least two different viewpoints about how those problems should be resolved.
Is it possible to reach a compromise between opposing viewpoints on the issues? If so, what would the compromise be? If you think compromise is impossible, what reasons do you have for thinking that? If you think compromise is not possible, what do think the outcome of the problem will be?
