Chapter Assignments (Your task is to write responses to each chapter essay question by its due date. For each question you choose to answer, your essay must be a minimum of four full paragraphs.
Your writing should be specific, concise and precise.
These questions are, by design, large in their scope. You should make some meaningful/important points regarding the question. In the Announcement section on the Homepage
you will see the criteria I use in assessing your writing and determining the points. Make sure to read this. Each chapter essay is worth up to 20 points so the 14 essays are worth a total of 280 points)

How what were traditionally had been weak and disunited American colonies able to defeat Great Britain, the most powerful nation in the western world, in a revolution? Note what key factors, people, and events, led to this result.
Chapter 7
How did the American Revolutionary government, up through the creation of the Constitution, effect the political and legal status of white women, Blacks, and Natives in the new United States?
Chapter 10
What were the keys reasons for the development of a “distinct” South in the United States and what were some its major effects on the country?
Chapter 11
What was urban life in the North like, 1815-1860? Be specific but also consider a wide range of points.
Chapter 12
What were reasons for and efforts to “reform” American society during the first half of the 1800s? Note the most important factors.
Chapter 13
Describe how the United States was able to successfully and rapidly expand west during the 1840s and 1850s. Be comprehensive in your response.
Chapter 14
What were the key events between 1845-1861 that led the United States to collapse into civil war? Cite all that you consider important.
Chapter 15
Why did the Union win the Civil War and why did it take four years to do so? Cite specific evidence to explain your answer.
Chapter 16
By 1877, would you argue that Reconstruction had been more a success or a failure? Cite specific evidence to support your decision.
