According to Erickson (1964) the middle adulthood stage is a time of increased generativitygiving back to the community and guiding the younger generation. The negative outcome of this stage is stagnation.
Analyze personal and contextual factors that promote emotional and social development in middle adulthood and explain how adults in this stage demonstrate generativity through work community service and their family.
Conversely discuss how adults with a sense of stagnation may present in a clinical setting.
Discuss how negative parent-child influences are carried forward.
Include a discussion on what mental health clinicians might consider when working with clients in middle adulthood. Recommend treatment goals that synthesize theories and models of individual cultural couple family and community resilience to address a middle adult client’s system.
