The Experience of Being Misunderstood as a Person Theory

Being misunderstood is a common occurrence in a situation in which the interaction between a given group of two or more individuals results in a form of communication that reveals a difference of view of one’s identity than that held by the individual (Edwards, 2020). Although most studies show that personal and social identities are misunderstood separately and differently in key demographics and individuals it is personality ultimately that is being misunderstood more frequently. A key example I would have to draw too is my high school life which was although a time of discovery and knowing myself still held much sway in the social hierarchy of how I saw my life. Although in most of my high school life, a sense of calm and comfortability enveloped me, still how my fellow peers saw and judged me was an all too seemingly different experience that eventually proved to me that difference of opinion is an all too uncontrollable and unavoidable circumstance. Although such a factor in my high school life played such an important role in how I developed as a human being it did not in any way make me feel like an unwilling participant in how I saw myself.

By asking my aunt and trying to keenly understand if there were any such situations in her life she fell misunderstood, I realized that this is a universal occurrence especially when it pertained to her job and talking with her bosses. A hierarchy-based theme and system could be seen here. Although we see a kind of symbolic interactionism within the workforce in which face to face contact with co-workers leads to repeated meaningful interactions there still is a kind of scenario in which being misunderstood by fellow individuals occurs in that instances of miscommunication will lead to an arise in excuses and an eventual jump to conclusions that further leads to a less sufficient and productive workforce.
