World Mythologies Midterm

For your midterm, we have been reviewing the work of Joseph Campbell and the Monomyth or Hero’s Journey. We have studied the feminist response to this, from Maureen Murdock, Jean Shindola Bolen, and Clarissa Pinkola Estes. We also have been constructing what a post-hero narrative looks like: for
instance, combining the two journeys into one great narrative. We have also looked at the rising archetypes of the Anti-Hero and Eco-Hero. You will watch the film, Avatar , and identify all 17 stages of the hero’s journey and all 8 of the shero’s journey. Your midterm should be thematically organized. It must be written in essay form and full sentences. I will not accept essays written in bullet form. You must give ample evidence why you are identifying a scene in the film with a stage of the monomyth by bringing in clues from the design of the scene: the set, dialogue, costumes, lighting, even the musical score.
If you cannot identify a certain stage, you must provide ample evidence as to why you do not see the stage, in order to receive credit for the answer. (Hint* All stages are present in the film.) Please note that there are both a road of trials and meeting w/ the goddess stages in each journey, these may be different for both journeys or they may overlap. Please be sure to make this distinction, in other worlds if you don’t tell me they are the same, and skip them, you will lose points so please make sure to identify them regardless.
As always, it is expected that you will bring in at least three in-house quotes and resources from class.
A great midterm will pull thematic threads from the coursework thus far into the midterm and will include at least three citations from course material, weaving some of the concepts we have been discussing throughout the course so far.
50 pts for identifying the stages.
10 pts for weaving in other course material.
60 pts total!
Have fun and may the force be with you!
